Located in Portugal's most southern region, the Algarve's golden coast embraces and shares all of its beauty and wonderful elements with many a visitor. It has around 450,000 inhabitants and around 10 million visitors a year. The Algarve has been Portugal's most recognised and most popular destination for many years now, not only for tourists but for the Portuguese people too. Many head down to the south for their summer holiday to experience all it has to offer.
As an award-winning destination, for the majority the Algarve signifies the perfect escape and pure relaxation for others it's a golfers paradise playing on world-famous golf courses. There are just so many activities to choose from - why not take to the water and try out diving, canoeing, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. Or get back on dry land and try out mountain biking, jeep safaris, horse riding or a game of tennis.
You also have the chance of experiencing the most amazing boat trips along the alluring coast in clear, blue waters and exploring hidden coves, rocky caves and secluded beaches. If you're lucky you may even get a glimpse of the wild dolphins.
Once a home to the Moors who called the region 'al-gharb' meaning the west, today the Algarve is full of quaint little whitewashed fishing towns and villages filled with pretty cobbled winding streets and squares with traditional restaurants. As well as the latter, it is also filled with luxurious resorts such as Vilamoura with its fabulous marina, the Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and many more.
However, if you're looking for nature in all its glory head for the Serra de Monchique (the highest mountain range in the Algarve) for its wonderful panoramic views. Ideal for hiking and taking in all of its extraordinary surroundings.
Faro is Algarve's capital city, if you want to escape the crowds you should head east. From there where you will come across the more secluded sand dunes, or venture even further to the nature reserve islands and lagoons for a spot of birdwatching. Alternatively, if you like the hustle and bustle of a busy town, head to the lively Albufeira for its popular beachfront restaurants, bars and nightclubs or to Lagos for its super hot nightlife and entertainment.
The Algarve is rich in history and beautiful artchitecture too, visit the Moorish capital Silves to see its Arabic red-stoned castle built in the 11th century. It is the best preserved Moorish castle in Portugal today. The Algarve also offers stunning handpainted pottery and ceramics which can make perfect gifts for a special loved one back home.
With near enough perfect weather all year round and warm, calm waters almost Mediterranean like, you can holiday here any time of the year. It's the perfect destination for families too with brilliant waterparks and thrilling theme parks to keep the little ones happy and entertained.
Driving through the Algarve couldn't be easier. You can either take the small coastal roads to take in those breathtaking views or take the main roads EN 125 / A22 (IP1) which run east to west - appreciate it at your leisure.
Hope like ours, yours is a very relaxing experience too.
