A Brasileira - Rua Garret, Chiado, Lisboa
The Cafe a Brasileira located in the Largo do Chiado (Chiado Square), Rua Garrett, is one of the oldest cafes in Lisbon, operating firstly as a shop since 1905. It was the first place to have sold the famous Portuguese bica (espresso). As one of the most popular café bars, it has non-stop customers wanting to sit out on the terrace. Even if you've come alone you will always be accompanied by the Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa, who has permanently sat at his table since 1988. His bronze statue has seen many a pretty picture, he's probably more famous as a model than he is as a poet. Like Fernando Pessoa who was a frequent visitor, many an artist and literary figure has walked through its doors.
Its art deco style is beautifully demonstrated in its ornate ceiling, brass fixtures and mirrored walls. You enter through its green and golden arched doorway to a sensational long bar with a few wooden booths towards the back of the room. |
Being a meeting haunt for many, it's the perfect place to people watch. With the hustle and bustle, it's sometimes difficult getting a table out on the terrace especially in the summer
Not the cheapest of places, serving up a nice pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) as well as many other tasty pastries, but it's worth the visit. We've read a few reviews on this venue and there are positive ones as well as negative. It seems when it gets very busy, the service and food isn't up to scratch. We've obviously been very lucky each time we've visited. We're never in a hurry so we probably don't even notice the long wait as we're just happy to be back again and again and happy to soak up all the atmosphere. Open from 8am-2am. |
