Ponte de Sor - Highly pleasant...

Ponte de Sor has developed and grown into a city over the last few decades and was given the city title in 1985. With a population of around 20,000 it has all the amenities a bigger city offers but without the hustle and bustle.

Located on the right bank of the Rio Sor (Sor River), the city was aptly named 'Ponte de Sor' which translates as 'The Sor Bridge'. One can still find Roman ruins from the 15th century but the old Roman bridge disintegrated and was rebuilt back in 1822 and then reconstructed in 2003.

Ponte de Sor is connected to the following villages: Foros de Arrao, Galveias, Longomel, Montargil, Tramaga and Vale de Acor which all belong to the same district, Portalegre.

Tramaga - A hidden gem...

Well before 1864 (the only recorded date, the exact date is unknown), this gorgeous little village was named 'Agua todo Ano' (water all year round) but was later renamed 'Tramaga' by its people, following a conversation had by two of its inhabitants a century ago. It has grown over the years and today has a population of around 1,800.

Tramaga is a hidden treasure and definitely worth a visit. If you enjoy old historic buildings and photography, its famous 'moinhos' (windmills) built c.13th century are an absolute dream. It's so idyllic and peaceful, you won't want to leave without enjoying the surroundings to the max.

Much bigger than Galveias in size, it has more to offer such as a cinema, swimming pools, gardens with bandstand, a train station, a variety of sports facilities including a skate park, schools, arts & culture centres, many
restaurants and a delightful riverside.

Highly recognised around the world for its cork industry, it has also evolved
its car, aviation, building and agriculture industries too, all having helped with its development and growth.

You can also visit Roman monuments found near the local water fountain, Fonte da Vila as well as its two churches and chapel - the 18th century Igreja de S. Joao, Igreja Matriz built in 1903 and the 17th century Capela de S. Pedro.

Ponte de Sor's latest addition is the Ponte Pedonal (bridge). Constructed with innovative engineering, it stands 32 metres in length without any supports or pillars and is illuminated in colour at night.
