Fancy an adventure?
Looking to escape the hustle and bustle when you next visit Lisbon? Well, why don't you get away from it all and visit the 'Margem Sul' (the south side) of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). You can either take in the awesome sights on a Ferry from Cais do Sodre Terminal in Lisbon to Cacilhas Ferry Terminal or drive across the 25 de Abril bridge through Almada to Cacilhas. Enjoy a Ferry ride at your leisure, it's a fantastic way of getting across the river and soaking in the spectacular views of both the bridge as well as the Lisbon and Cachilhas/Almada waterfronts.
Riverbank ruins
During our little adventure whilst walking along the riverbank, an area known as 'Ginjal' before reaching 'Atira-te ao Rio', we noticed how hugely dilapidated the area was. The run down buildings to our left were so old they were falling to pieces and in some instances in quite dangerous conditions. We encountered wonderful abandoned warehouses and homes and couldn't help thinking what a superb location this must have been in times gone by.
This was probably once a thriving riverbank so it was a shame to see it in such disrepair. Although, we're sure that some developer will awaken this magnificent spot someday soon. A couple of buildings were full of graffiti and some still have their beautiful, original tiles. To me, this was all an incredible sight since as I just love to take a photo or two...
Take a leisurely stroll
Further along the riverbank we reached the panoramic lift 'Boca do Vento' (built in 2000) - the top of the lift is based in the old historic quarters of Almada. We also encountered a wonderful garden pathway which lead us up to the old quay, the 'Olho de Boi' shipyards. It became quite dark in areas so if you do visit, do be careful and remember not to fall over or into the water on the way back - it's unlit in areas, with no safety railings and a few potholes to keep an eye out for!...
Atira-te ao Rio
Atira-te ao Rio restaurant seems also worth a visit... so we have decided to try it out the the next time we visit Lisbon as it also looks very charming and pretty fantastic too.
Cacilhas waterfront restaurants
During our fascinating walks we came across several interesting restaurants we're thinking of trying the next time we're in town and we'll let you know if any are worth a visit too.
Easy parking
On our second and third visit to Ponto Final, we decided to park in the public car park, which was reasonably priced at a couple of Euros. It is located next to Cacilhas Ferry Terminal and by the Fragata Dom Fernando II e Glória (Ship), you can't miss it. You can also admire/visit the ‘Barracuda’ submarine whilst you're there.
All in all, we've immensely enjoyed our time spent on this wonderful riverside. Whether during the day or at night, whether eating out or just going for a stroll, it's always been a joy and worth the visit.
